Layne McLean - SSEA President

My Boston Terrier Elle. She is named after the original name of Gold Beach, which is Ellensburg.

I have been the President of the Shasta Secondary Education Association for 3 years. I am currently teaching in my 33rd year in the SUHSD as a Business and Technology teacher at Foothill HS. I wholeheartedly believe I have the best job in this district.

I am happily married to my wife, Denise (a junior high math teacher in Gold Beach, Oregon). I also have two grown daughters in the Redding area. Ilani works for us as a paraprofessional at Enterprise HS, and is a proud SSEA member. Morgan is a 2015 Foothill graduate and lives here with her new service dog, Kay, and her old Boston Terrier, Syrah. I enjoy teaching, coaching girls golf, freshman girls basketball, and playing golf when I can. I split my off days/weekends between Redding and Gold Beach, Oregon. I enjoy building and completing home improvement projects in my time away from school.

Prior to serving as President, I was the lead negotiator for the association for over 10 years. I have also been a long-time site representative at Foothill, and chaired the "Crisis Committee" in the early 2000's. I am proud to represent people and be a union member.

My goal as your President is to fairly represent all in the pursuit of happiness and fulfillment on the job. I enjoy working with the Superintendent, his cabinet, and the school board in fostering a good working and professional relationship between groups. Working in education is a tough job on all levels, and it is my goal that every employee feels valued in the workplace.
