Layne McLean - SSEA Past President

I served as President of the Shasta Secondary Education Association for four years. I retired from teaching after 35 years in the SUHSD as a Business and Technology teacher at Foothill HS. I wholeheartedly believe I had the best job in this district.
I am happily married to my wife, Denise (a junior high math teacher in Gold Beach, Oregon). We also have two grown daughters in the Redding area. Ilani works for the SUHSD as a paraprofessional at Enterprise HS, and is a proud SSEA member. Morgan is a 2015 Foothill graduate and lives here with her service dog, Gypsy. I enjoy working on projects around the house, and playing golf when I can. I split my off days/weekends between Redding and Gold Beach, Oregon. My goal is to find a new career not necessarily in education, but based in education so that my years of experience can benefit me in those endeavors.
Prior to serving as President, I was the lead negotiator for the association for over 10 years. I have also been a long-time site representative at Foothill, and chaired the "Crisis Committee" in the early 2000s. I am proud to represent people and be a voice for their needs and wants. My favorite accomplishment in my four years as association President is that I did not file one grievance with my district.
My goal in retirement is to find a position where I can help those that are working directly with our students. I want to share what I know with individuals and help them achieve success. Working in education is a tough job on all levels, and it is my goal that every employee feels valued and supported in the workplace.
